Education New Zealand (ENZ) announced this week that the country has established an ambitious objective to expand its international education sector over the next three years. It has set an ambitious goal to double the value of its education exports to NZ$4.4 billion by 2027. It will focus on growing and diversifying the number of foreign students enrolled in the country. Education New Zealand (ENZ) has announced a strategy to achieve this goal. The plan focuses on welcoming international students in New Zealand, targeting 100,000 enrollments by 2027, up from 69,000 in 2023.
Strategies to Achieve the Goal
The plan includes additional investments in key growth markets, targeted investments in specific market segments, and a new recruitment strategy that highlights New Zealand's unique value proposition.
- Investments will be strategically allocated to high-growth markets, such as India, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
- The targeted initiatives will focus on specific market segments in Japan and Thailand.
Student’s Positive Experience
The expansion plan has received a boost from the 2024 International Student Experience Survey. The survey gathered responses from 6,431 international students studying in New Zealand during May and June 2024. It showed that nearly nine in ten students (86%) had a positive experience studying in New Zealand. 41% of students said that they had had an "excellent" experience in New Zealand (a notable 8% increase from the 2023 survey).Students praised the people and connections they made in New Zealand, as well as their education experience, making study arrangements, arrival and orientation, and living experience.
International students also expressed high satisfaction with their experience of using education agents to facilitate their enrollment in New Zealand. Specifically, they praised agents' expertise in navigating education providers' application processes (84%), their knowledge of New Zealand's application options (81%), and the time-saving benefits of working with an agent, which streamlined the application process (79%). This positive feedback highlights the valuable role that education agents play in supporting international students as they pursue educational opportunities in New Zealand.
New Recruitment Strategy
ENZ officials have outlined a new strategy to differentiate New Zealand in a competitive market. It has identified 3 focus sectors where New Zealand has globally recognized expertise. They are:
- Agri-food systems
- Aerospace technology
- Renewable energy
A new branding and marketing program will be piloted in the coming months, featuring a "mixed reality" tool that provides an immersive experience for prospective students.
Market Testing and Validation
The early phase will involve market testing of new touchstones for students and families, including case studies and a virtual open day platform. ENZ will also conduct further market testing in China and South Asia to drive student interest and generate new leads for New Zealand institutions.
By focusing on diversifying markets, targeted investments, and a unique value proposition, New Zealand aims to achieve its ambitious goal of doubling education exports by 2027.
