France continues to strengthen its position as a global hub for higher education, attracting a record 450,000 international students during the 2024–25 academic year, according to the latest report by Campus France. This marks a 4.5% increase from the previous year, following a 4.6% rise in 2023–24—highlighting a consistent upward trend in France’s appeal among students worldwide.

 

While countries like Canada saw a sharp 28% growth in international student numbers in 2024, and the UK and US maintained strong growth at 10% and 11% respectively, France’s steady and sustained increase underscores its dedication to delivering high-quality, accessible education.

 

A noteworthy 15% of all students in French higher education institutions now come from abroad, reflecting the country’s global outreach and its welcoming academic environment.

 

Asia-Pacific Region Drives Growth in France

The Asia-Pacific region, particularly China and India, is a major contributor to France's enrollment surge. Chinese students increased by 6%, while Indian students rose by 12%.   4. Italy: 21,040 (+5%); consistent growth
  5. Senegal: 16,955 (+11%); a substantial increase
  6. Tunisia: 15,255 (+7%); steady growth
  7. Spain: 12,090 (+4%); moderate growth
  8. Côte d'Ivoire: 11,770 (+10%); significant increase
  9. Lebanon: 11,235 (-3%); despite the decline, 90% growth over five years
  10. Cameroon: 10,880 (+11%); substantial growth

Business Schools are Gaining Popularity

The business schools in France have witnessed significant growth, attracting 11% more international students. This trend is proved in the QS report, which highlights that 31% of Indian students are interested in studying Business and Management.

French Higher Education Shines in Shanghai Rankings

The latest Shanghai ranking, which was released on 15 August, revealed once again the outstanding performance of French higher education institutions. Twenty-five institutions ranked in the Top 1,000 and 18 in the Top 500. The University of Paris Saclay stands out, securing the 12th position in the list of top universities in the world.
