  • The ELPIS I CLE is a supplementary course providing students with an understanding of the national legal systems of various European countries, European and comparative law in addition to legal studies at their home university.
Through research-led teaching and collaborative working methods, teaching materials are produced, specialised projects carried out and special events (summer academy, moot courts and a legal clinic) are held with the participation of international students.
The course, which was developed by the ELPIS university law alliance, offers an insight into the law of several European legal systems, as well as into European Union law. By completing an integrated, compulsory one-year study period abroad, students are in addition equipped to work in international legal practice.
During their stay abroad, ELPIS students acquire the skills required for lawyers to work in the increasingly open European market. These include the awareness of different legal ways of thinking, the ability to access foreign legal sources and a certain skill in combining the norms of different legal systems with institutional conditions, while taking EU legal requirements into consideration.

  • Students usually spend two semesters at one of our partner universities. During this time they develop not only legal skills through the comparison of legal systems but also personal skills through intercultural exchange. Four courses on the law of the country they are visiting (preferably dogmatic core subjects such as contract law) must be successfully completed at the foreign partner university. Further requirements can be seen here.

The course including the certificate exam is normally completed in 1 ½ years. On application, this period of time can be excluded from the time period calculated for the “free shot attempt” for the compulsory Lower Saxony state exam; i.e. it does not have a negative effect on the free shot attempt.

The following modules must be completed: 4 courses of national law, 1 course European law, 1 course comparative law (i.e. European Legal Practice in Hannover), 1 seminar corresponding with the subject area of the certificate degree.

Entry Requirement

  • Applicant must have a Bachelor degree.
