  • Computer Science (M.Sc.)

  • Computer science is the science of systematic and automated processing of information. It deals with the structures, characteristics and possibilities to describe information and information processing as well as the setup, working method and construction principles of computer systems. General procedural methods of information processing and general methods of their application are researched. The programme contents include the development of modern experimental and product oriented information processing systems. Computer science can be divided into the areas of theoretical computer science, practical computer science, technical computer science as well as applied computer science.
Students will deal with the possibilities of structuring, formalisation and mathematization of application areas in the form of special models and simulations. They will acquire knowledge in engineering development of software systems for different areas of application with special consideration of high adaptability and the man-computer interaction of such systems.

The programme aims to convey extensive knowledge in the subject of computer science in theory and practice as well as with reference to an application subject. This comprises methods to solve application problems and their realization in an appropriate computer form.

In Göttingen, particular importance is placed on the close connection with the application subject. In addition, the practical orientation can be further developed through project work and external internships. These internships are undertaken in an industrial company or a research institute.
Those selecting computer science as their subject of study should be interested in a mathematically formal as well as an application-oriented practical way of working. The capability of working in a team is an important requirement for later daily work. Knowledge of the English language is required. Specialised knowledge, especially in programming, is not required.
    Programme structure
The Master’s programme comprises 120 credit points made up of:

  • 1. Modules from the area of Core Informatics (30 credits)
  • 2. Modules from the specialisation of Applied Informatics (at least 15 credits)
  • 3. Modules from the specialisations of the application subjects (at least 15 credits)
  • 4. 30 credits freely selected from the three above mentioned blocks. These credits can also be acquired through project work in a work group, within the area of Computer Science/Applied Informatics.
  • 5. The Master’s thesis in Computer Science of Applied Informatics (30 credit points).
  • As long as the special demands are fulfilled in a special subject of Computer Science along with a compatible application subject, an additional certificate specifying the subject orientation will be issued by the institute. Details are found in the examination and programme regulations.
    Fields of occupation
Computer scientists are required in almost all subject disciplines. Typical fields of work include software and hardware development; consulting and training; further development and adaptation of application systems; service and maintenance of computer networks; training and teaching; research and development. Different fields of work are also possible depending on the application subject. Career prospects for graduates of Computer Science are very good due to the interdisciplinary programme. Modern IT systems are now so complex and interlinked that highly trained specialists are in demand.

Entry Requirement

  • Applicant must have a bachelor degree.

Application Process

  • Admission to the Master’s degree programme in Taxation is competitive. Admission into the programme is based on proof of relevance of previous studies.
Proof of relevance of previous studies

  • A minimum of six semesters of study culminating in a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent course of study with a minimum of 180 ECTS credits in economics or a relevant field.
  • Applicants must have completed at least 150 of the 180 ECTS credits at the time of application. Unfortunately, we cannot consider applications that do not meet this requirement.
  • Completed 60 ECTS credits and course work in Business Administration, Economics, and Law including 30 ECTS credits in Finance, Corporate Taxation, Public Finance, Microeconomics, and Law.
  • As part of fulfilling the minimum of 30 ECTS course requirements in Finance, Business Administration, Taxation, Microeconomics and Law:
    • A minimum of 18 ECTS must be completed in either Business Taxation, Finance, or Law
    • A minimum of 18 ECTS from the modules must be from coursework that is of intermediate or advanced levels
  • A minimum of 12 ECTS credits completed in Mathematics, Statistics, or Econometrics.
  • Proof of relevant language skills

  • If German is not your native language, you will need to submit proof of your German language skills (for a list of accepted documents, see: "Required application documents").
  • Please note

  • If you have not completed your degree at the time of application, the current average score will be calculated.
  • For courses to be considered intermediate or advanced, the course content must clearly go beyond introductory or basic concepts.
  • Determining the relevance of previous studies for the M.Sc. Taxation programme will be based on the documents enclosed in the application (see: "Required application documents").
  • The selection process is a two-stage process. The initial selection round will evaluate candidates based on their written application. The second round will evaluate candidates based on personal interviews. Further information on the application process and eligibility requirements can be found in the admission regulations ("Ordnung über die Zugangsvoraussetzungen und über die Zulassung") for the Master’s degree in Taxation (see: "Admission regulations").
