  • Sustainable International Agriculture (M.Sc.)

  • The Master's programme in Sustainable International Agriculture (SIA) is a consecutive joint Master study programme of the agricultural faculties of the Georg-August-University of Goettingen and the University of Kassel - Witzenhausen comprising 120 ECTS. All SIA modules are taught in English.

    The Master"s programme consists of fifteen modules with 6 ECTS each; a Master's thesis in the 4th semester with 22,5 ECTS; colloquium with 7,5 ECTS.

    Contents
    The study programme is internationally oriented and offers three possibilities for specialization: "International Agribusiness and Rural Development Economics", "International Organic Agriculture" and "Tropical Agriculture" and Agroecosystems Sciences

    I. Specialization in "International Agribusiness and Rural Development Economics"
    Four compulsory modules must be taken (18 ECTS): World agricultural markets and trade, Econometrics I, Socioeconomics of rural development and food security, Sustainable International Agriculture: basic principles and approaches. Five mandatory modules (3o ECTS) must be chosen (among these, at least one methodological module). Six elective modules (36 ECTS) are to be chosen (you can also chose elective modules from the list of so far not attended mandatory modules).

    II. Specialization in "International Organic Agriculture"
    One bridging module and four compulsory modules must be taken (upon application, the bridging module can be skipped if past academic achievements testify the respective knowledge): Soil and plant science (bridging module), Organic livestock farming under temperate and tropical conditions, Organic cropping systems under temperate and (sub)tropical conditions, Applied statistical modelling, Sustainable International Agriculture: basic principles and approaches (30 ECTS). Four mandatory modules (24 ECTS) must be chosen (among these, at least one methodological module). Six elective modules (36 ECTS) are to be chosen (you can also chose elective modules from the list of so far not attended mandatory modules).

    III. Specialization in Tropical Agriculture and Agroecosystems Sciences
    One bridging module and four compulsory modules must be taken (upon application, the bridging module can be skipped if past academic achievements testify the respective knowledge): Soil and plant science (bridging module), Tropical animal husbandry systems, Crops and production systems in the tropics, Applied statistical modelling, Sustainable International Agriculture: basic principles and approaches (30 ECTS). Four mandatory modules (24 ECTS) must be chosen (among these, at least one methodological module). Six elective modules (36 ECTS) are to be chosen (you can also chose elective modules from the list of so far not attended mandatory modules).

    Forms of teaching and learning
    The Master's programme requires compulsory attendance and uses the following forms of teaching and learning:
    Direct contact courses, seminars, excursions, exercises, work groups, E-learning and projects

Entry Requirement


  • Applicant must have a bachelor degree.

Application Process


  • Admission to the Master’s degree programme in Taxation is competitive. Admission into the programme is based on proof of relevance of previous studies.
    Proof of relevance of previous studies

  • A minimum of six semesters of study culminating in a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent course of study with a minimum of 180 ECTS credits in economics or a relevant field.
  • Applicants must have completed at least 150 of the 180 ECTS credits at the time of application. Unfortunately, we cannot consider applications that do not meet this requirement.
  • Completed 60 ECTS credits and course work in Business Administration, Economics, and Law including 30 ECTS credits in Finance, Corporate Taxation, Public Finance, Microeconomics, and Law.
  • As part of fulfilling the minimum of 30 ECTS course requirements in Finance, Business Administration, Taxation, Microeconomics and Law:
    • A minimum of 18 ECTS must be completed in either Business Taxation, Finance, or Law
    • A minimum of 18 ECTS from the modules must be from coursework that is of intermediate or advanced levels
  • A minimum of 12 ECTS credits completed in Mathematics, Statistics, or Econometrics.
  • Proof of relevant language skills

  • If you have not completed your degree at the time of application, the current average score will be calculated.
  • For courses to be considered intermediate or advanced, the course content must clearly go beyond introductory or basic concepts.
  • Determining the relevance of previous studies for the M.Sc. Taxation programme will be based on the documents enclosed in the application (see: "Required application documents").
  • The selection process is a two-stage process. The initial selection round will evaluate candidates based on their written application. The second round will evaluate candidates based on personal interviews.
